For hazelnuts, walnuts and other nuts, the right big bag depends on whether the product is in shell or shelled. In-shell nuts need to breathe; without air circulation moisture builds up and the risk of mould rises. Kernels contain oil and must be protected from moisture and oxygen.

What to consider for hazelnuts and nuts
- Ventilation: For in-shell hazelnuts and walnuts, a ventilated big bag with ventilation strips prevents moisture build-up.
- Moisture: In kernels, moisture increases the risk of mould; a moisture-barrier liner is recommended.
- Oxygen: In oil-rich kernels, contact with oxygen leads to rancidity; an oxygen-barrier liner is preferred for long storage.
- Outdoor storage: UV-stabilised fabric is used for big bags that will be kept outdoors during harvest.
